Why Fly Fish In SW Colorado?
Southwest Colorado Fishing is one of the best kept secrets in the
angling world. The lack of angling pressure and the amount of fishable
water create a perfect scenario for fishing success. Our pristine
and diverse watersheds of the San Miguel, the Dolores, and the Uncompahgre
drainages encompass tail waters, still waters, and freestone style
fisheries. The aquatic insect population, the bulk of a trout’s
prey source is staggering in our rivers. Multiple species of stoneflies,
caddis, mayflies, and terrestrials abound. What truly separates
us is just not the trout but the incredible habitat where they live,
nestled in the San Juan Mountains. The San Juan natural habitat
offers up the greenest, most lush and pristine views imaginable
as one stalks wild trout.

What’s the difference?
Further Adventures is by far the most customer service oriented
fishing outfitter in the San Juan region. We do not skimp on the
details. Your guide can take you to the sweetest fishing spots
along the San Miguel River,
a wild running river through pristine riparian habitat or to private
water sites along the anglers’ favorite Dolores
River. Rediscover old Colorado at the Centennial Ranch, a
classic Colorado ranch along the Uncompahgre Double Diamond Ranch.
In early season we have the ultimate hiding place of the “giants”
(20-40” trout!) at the Gurley
Inlet.

San
Miguel
The Miguel is one of Colorado’s best-kept secrets. Novice
anglers to the most traveled veterans can appreciate this wonderful
freestone river. Freestone means that the river is undammed - left
free to run at natures’ will. The San Miguel offers one of
the best Caddis hatches in the state during the summer to some of
the most entertaining hopper fishing in the fall. This ever entertaining
high alpine river boasts all trout species, plus a variety of aquatic
terrain from gradient pocket water fishing in the upper sections
to slower moving riffles and bends on the lower reaches. Up to 20”
strong scrappy fish can be caught. Average size of 12” to
13” predominately rainbows and browns readily take dry flies
and nymphs. Full day and half day trips are offered on the Miguel
year round, but it fishes best post run off typically mid June all
the way through November.

Dolores
Amidst the high San Juan’s near Lizard head pass starts the
Dolores River, an angler’s high mountain paradise. Beautiful
pocket water and deep pools entertain anglers of all abilities.
Rainbows, Browns, Cutthroats, cut bows, and brookies call the Dolores
home, feasting on a smorgasbord of caddis, stoneflies, mayflies,
midges and the occasional fat grasshopper. Strong 8” to 20
plus inch fish respond to multiple presentations from a hopper imitation
churning in a back eddy to streamers dredged through deeper pools.
On this wonderful river we offer three different private water locations
treating anglers to full and half day trips. The Dolores can be
fished year round but its colors shine through post run off in spring
all the way through the fall and early winter.

Gurley Inlet
This is a “not-to-miss” special early season treasure.
Nestled below Lone Cone Peak runs Gurley Creek - a small freestone
creek teaming with massive eager cutthroats and rainbows ranging
from 16” to 27”! Everything at Gurley is bigger than
your imagination, from the views to the trout. Gurley’s deep
dark pools and wonderful bends create an ideal environment for anglers
to test their will against big trout in small water gorging themselves
on large nymphs and slashing at attractor patterns. This is by far
one of the best early fishing spots in the Southwest. Very large
trout hide out here in this exclusive fishery. Deer and other wildlife
wander about this exquisite habitat. We are pleased to offer full
day guided trips at Gurley during the early summer months typically
June into the first parts of July.
